It carved a nice groove into the timing chain cover, too. This is probably going to be more expensive than I expected.

If it just rubbed the front of the cover I wouldn’t worry about it. You’ll know if there’s a hole since oil would be leaking through it.

My concern is that it’s a very big groove, and if water gets trapped in it and freezes, it could crack the timing chain cover. Regardless, a small patch is now in just in case.

If it’s open the expansion shouldn’t be an issue, but if you’re worried I bet some SteelStick or similar would ease that.

It will expand in the path of least resistance when it freezes. You have to worry about it inside an engine because the path of least resistance is trough the block.

that’s the problem with bearings, when they start to go you have about six nanoseconds before they’re on the verge of catastrophic failure.
